The Hotel Salut Plaza.
The other members of our group who arrived a bit earlier also me us there. We were fortunate to be able to check into our rooms and some of us had lunch at the restaurant downstairs.
We then met as a group with our wonderful tour educator from Da’at, ARZA tours, Lana Zilberman Soloway. After an introductory briefing we headed to St. Mark’s Plaza. Walking through the city, crossing over many bridges and getting an initial glimpse only made us want to stop and take more pictures and visit galleries and shops.
We met up with our local guide, Monika. The requirement is that we must have a different local guide in each of the cities we visit. The magnificent plaza and buildings were a delight to behold. We began at the Golden Basilica of Saint Marco. The magestic basilica was initially constructed over 1000 years ago but with the
many repairs and updates can be described as a continuous work in progress. We had to walk through without Monika being able to tell us a lot about it because she had to keep her voice very quiet. There were many Hebrew Bible themed paintings in the vestibule, where those who had not been baptized yet
had to remain before entering the church. Inside the imagery was from the Christian Testament.
We then proceeded to the opulent Doge’s Palace. The Doge’s r were the titular heads of state of Venice but truly had little or no power. Once appointed they kept their post for life. The average age of Doge appointments was 72.
We saw numerous rooms and chambers, with astounding paintings by artists such as Tintoretto, Veronese, and Titian.
By then the group was exhausted so went directly to the restaurant for a scrumptious dinner; including a first course of pasta in a salmon sauce, a main dish of Bream, and a chocolate volcano cake. The back to the Hotel for night’s sleep.
